This young Native American, having mixed bloodlines looked more like a Plains Indian than a Chinookan. His dress is a handsome mixture of the foreign and the traditional, the Plateau and the Plains. Wisham boys went through a lengthy initiation into full manhood, beginning at the age of seven or eight, including the attainment of spiritual attributes instructed by their fathers or another male relative and treks in darkness to lonely spots in the high hills in search of spirits.
This portrait was drawn from a reference photo by Edward S. Curtis taken circa 1900.
